Much-changed Weymouth in derby cup defeat

WEYMOUTH 0

POOLE TOWN 2

A MUCH-CHANGED Weymouth fell to a 2-0 defeat to Poole Town, with Sam Griffin and Sam House scoring the goals in the Dorset Senior Cup semi-final.

It was an experimental team from Weymouth, with only Tom McHale, Ashley Wells and Josh Carmichael keeping their places from the 0-0 draw with Wimborne at the weekend.

Poole did the early running, and early pressure was only eased with a timely header away from danger under pressure by the home defence.

The visitors were dominating, but unable to cut through the Weymouth defence.

However, a lovely move forward from Kieron Roberts and Charlie Kendal earned a corner as the Terras relieved pressure.

Roberts went close with a 40-yard lobbed effort, after Poole goalkeeper Ben Rolleston was off his line, but it fell narrowly wide.

A great run deep into the penalty box from Harry Burnes nearly created a goal, for Weymouth but his cross was cleared.

Poole then took the lead, capitalising on a counter-attack.

Corby Moore broke forward, and was able to slip the ball to Griffin who fired in.

The pattern of play continued, with Poole dominating and missing some golden chances to add to their score, with the half-time score 1-0 to Poole.

Charles Medway had a good half after the break for the Terras, and as a whole it was vastly improved, as Poole’s first-half threat became largely nullified during the second period.

Shots from distance came in from Medway and Roberts but neither truly threatened.

Carmichael went on a busting run but fired over the bar.

Yet the Dolphins had their chances, Griffin got a great cross in from the right-hand side, but narrowly failed to find House.

House then kept the pressure on Harvey and reaped the rewards, breaking forward and slotting past McHale at his near-post.

Carmichael went close with an ambitious but almost brilliant 40-yard free-kick which went narrowly over the bar.

However, the visitors held on to book their place in the final against Wimborne Town, who beat Bridport 3-2.
