Vanarama’s Fanarama! A supporter’s take on 2019 – and look at what the New Year could bring for the Terras!
Weymouth die-hard Richard Wood offers league sponsors Vanarama a personal take on an incredible year
So the end of 2019 is nearly here – sum it all up…
A great year, on an off the field. Topped off with promotion to the National League South and a great first half of the season.
What would have been your reaction a year ago if you were told you would hold a National League South promotion position 12 months on?
I would be delighted. I always thought we could surprise a few people, the hard part was getting out of the Southern League, which is tough.
The answer may be obvious, but your 2019 high point?
Winning promotion and winning the Southern League Shield outright, a trophy I have wanted us to win for a long time!
And the low point?
Not too many to be fair. The only slight disappointment was going out of the FA Cup to Dover at home as we played well on the day, but a couple of late mistakes cost us.
Who has been the best player this year?
I guess you can’t look beyond Brandon Goodship for his goals, but over the whole calendar year Abdulai Baggie was a key performer last season and so far this.
There is a lot of talk about team of the decade at the moment – but who has been your stand out player since 2010?
Had to be Brandon Goodship. A great player at our level and we were lucky to have him as long as we did.
What does 2020 hold for the Terras?
Who knows? But I think a play-off place is more than a realistic target, if we can remain consistent.
Let’s get personal – how long have you been following the club and how did you become involved?
I was first taken along by my Uncle in the mid-80s when we were a decent side in the old Conference league, then in later years was a regular with my Dad.
What’s so special about Weymouth that makes it different from every other club for you?
My hometown, and the fact that it is more “real”. There is a bond between management, players and supporters. You just don’t have that in league football and certainly not in the Premier League. There is great pride in following your local club.
The National League’s leasing partner Vanarama have this season launched the Club Reward scheme to help fans back their club’s budget. Every time a fan takes out a brand new van lease with Vanarama or a brand new car lease with Motorama their club will earn £100 and you will receive £30 cashback!
