Weymouth ace Cody Cooke scores to topple Totton

WEYMOUTH opened their pre-season campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over AFC Totton at Snows Stadium.

New striker Cody Cooke scored after the break to deny the battling Stags a goalless draw against the National League side.

Josh McQuoid tried his luck first before Weymouth keeper Gerard Benfield was called upon to keep the Terras level.

Former Terra Brett Williams released Sylvano Obeng and Benfield had to show cat-like reactions to claw his shot behind.

Andreas Robinson forced a good save from home keeper Amadeusz Skrzyniarz before interim boss Bradley Asagba made 11 changes at the break.

Chief amongst them was Cooke, who nearly scored within a minute of the restart only to divert his shot wide on the stretch.

Cooke made the breakthrough in the 62nd minute when a neat turn inside the box set up a gorgeous curling shot for which Skrzyniarz had no answer.

Eight minutes later, Cooke gave another glimpse of his talent when he rattled the post.

In a hectic finish, Williams fired over for Totton before Jack Hoey and a trialist both came close for Weymouth, who eventually claimed victory.

Havant & Waterlooville visit Weymouth on Saturday (3pm).
