Weymouth Vs Enfield Town

National League South, Bob Lucas Stadium, Saturday 25th January, 3PM GMT

It hasn’t been very long, has it, Terras fans?

After Tuesday’s narrow loss to Maidstone United, the third one-goal defeat to a top-seven side in as many games, we’re back at the Bob Lucas this afternoon.

Unlike the previous promotion-hopefuls, today’s opponents, Enfield Town, are in a similar situation to us, their 19 points in 27 games placing them in the unwanted relegation battle.

A win for us this afternoon would take us within a point within the “Towners,” and potentially nine points off safety with a game in hand should other results go our way.

However, a fifth successive loss by approx. 5pm  could leave us as much as 15 points inside the drop zone, and seven behind our opponents.

Put simply, today’s contest is a crucial one for both sides.

IS THIS YEAR A DOWNER FOR THE TOWNERS

But if either side hope for a win, it would be something of a rarity given their recent form.

Whilst ours is already well-documented and needs no repeating (you only do that if your team is winning), the Towners are only marginally above us in the form table, not just just the actual table.

With just two wins and eight points in their last 10 games, only four teams have had worse results during that timeframe, with one of them being Weston-super-Mare who were table-toppers when we faced them earlier this campaign.

Their most recent of those victories came in their second match of 2025, after midfield hero Sam Youngs’ 95th-minute winner was enough to seal all three points for his side against Chelmsford City.

Youngs, who has made over 300 appearances for the North London side, has been one of Enfield’s more reliable players this season, his 76th-minute equaliser last week at home to Bath City giving them a crucial point.

Overall, while their results may not seem pleasing on the surface, life in the National League South has been a continuous impressive journey for Gavin MacPherson’s side as they are just past the halfway point of their first season in England’s sixth division.

When the club was founded 23 years ago by the Enfield Supporters Trust, after the original Enfield FC had their stadium sold which left them homeless, few could have envisioned where they would end up after they began life in the Essex Senior League ahead of the 2001-02 season.

But after beating Chatham 3-0 in the Isthmian Premier Division play-off final, they would soon play in the “second tier of non-league football” for the very first time.

Though their first season amongst the big boys has left them fighting for survival, they have had some high points, one of them being a victory over us in early October.

The London hopefuls were already celebrating their annual “Whole Club Day,” and the final result was a further excuse for a party.

Reece Beckles-Richards scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory at our expense in the 74th minute, as we were confined to one of our 11 league losses by a one-goal deficit this season.

If we are to “get those three points,” it will take a “great performance” against a side who have similar objectives, and who have beaten us already…
