Two weeks ago, we welcomed the signing of 23-year-old midfielder Callum Watts, who headed down to Dorset from Salisbury. The new Terra spoke to us today about how he feels to be a Weymouth player, this season’s objectives, and more…
On how it feels to be a Weymouth player
It feels really, really good to be a Weymouth player. I’m looking forward to being a part of the massive club and hopefully get us promoted this year.
On what attracted him to the club
Weymouth has great fans, a massive stadium and a really good team – I’ve played against a few of the players. They’ve managed to keep hold of their best players, too. I’m walking into a strong squad, and I’m definitely up for the challenge of standing out in this team.
On the team’s objective this season
The message from the manager has been clear – we need to go up. This club needs to get promoted and back to where it belongs, in the National League South, and above. We know what we need to do. Getting out of this league will be hard, but, if we keep our players fit, I’m sure we can do it.
On what he can bring to the team
My experience in different settings, I think. I’ve played for Chelmsford City, when they pushed for promotion, and for Salisbury, who were fighting to stay up. In footballing terms, I’ve experienced both worlds.
On how he’s gelled with the squad so far
I’ve trained with the team for about two weeks, and I’m beginning to understand what we’re all good at. We’re all training hard, and we’re beginning to be on the same wavelength. We’ve done a bit of team bonding and got to know each other, too.
On the objectives of pre-season
As the manager has said, pre-season is about fitness. We’re trying to keep as fit as we can, so we’re in the best shape possible ahead of the first game of the season. We need to be fit, sharp and ready. If you’re not fit, teams will kill you off.
On our upcoming match against Swindon
We’re all excited to be playing at home, in front of the fans – I’m sure they’re as excited as we are. It will be a tough game, but a good game. We’re treating this like a proper match. We need to show the fans why we aim to do well in the league this season.
