Weymouth got their first three points of the season in dramatic fashion as they edged past Kings Lynn 2-1 at the Bob Lucas on Saturday.
Brian Stock made just the one change from Tuesdays defeat to Barnet with injured Shamir Mullings making way for Sean Shields. This, a first start for the Terras winger.
Weymouth started well and a nice turn of pace from Calvin Brooks saw the winger beat his man. His cross looked certain to find Cody Cooke, but the ball was headed away just before the Terras striker made contact.
The visitors had the first chance of the game in the fifteenth minute. Cameron King controlled the ball from a cleared Kings Lynn corner. The attacker controlled it before striking the ball through a crowded penalty area. Jack Bycroft lost sight of the ball but managed to get across to it. Adam Marriott attempted to bundle the ball in but had committed a foul on Bycroft in the process to squash the danger.
Terras fans had to wait nearly four hundred minutes for a goal but their first shot on target in the game found the back of the net. McCarthy dispossessed a Kings Lynn midfielder and then sent the ball out to Oliie Harfield on the left. The wing back bombed down the channel to deliver a cross as Weymouth loaded the area. The ball was deep and went over the defenders heads but was met by Cooke at the back post, who acrobatically volleyed it goal bound with his left foot.
Weymouth went into half time with a 1-0 lead, but lost the lead in the fifty second minute as their defence was split open. Michael Clunan was fed a through ball and was unmarked in the area. The Linnets captain saw the space of Adam Marriott and played it across to the striker who netted into an open goal.
Jordan Richards had a chance to make it 2-1, but his powerful shot from range was collected by Bycroft.
A tense period of play saw neither side make any chances until the final fifteen minutes.
The Terras had given away a penalty in the seventy fourth minute when Calvin Brooks brought down Marriott in the area. The Linnets number ten stepped up to take the penalty but was denied by Bycroft, palming the ball away to his right.
The resulting counter attack found its way to Cooke. The Terras target man held the ball up well before releasing Sean Shields away on the left wing. Shields drove into the area, and caught goalkeeper Archie Mair off guard but his curled effort struck Mair’s right post.
The eighty first minute saw tempers flare, with Rory McAuley being shown a second yellow for an off the ball incident with defender Brennan Camp who went down clutching his face.
Linnets manager Ian Culverhouse then made all of his substitutions in an attempt to control the game. However, within a minute of the changes, substitute Ross Barrows was adjudged to have committed a hand ball in the area following a Shields cross, gifting a penalty to Weymouth.
Substitute Tom Whelan stepped up to take the penalty and slotted the ball away cooly past Mair’s left, with the goalkeeper going the other way.
The Terras had to hold on during five minutes of added time, and controlled the game to their tempo to make sure they had three points.
Weymouth now sit in seventeenth place, with four points. They look ahead now to their FA Cup clash at home to Oxford City next Saturday.
