TERRAS boss Garry Hill has hinted Simon Browne may have a future with the club after all.
The stalwart defender days at Weymouth looked numbered after being told he was free to leave by previous boss Steve Johnson.
But after an impressive display in last weekend’s win over Bognor Regis Town, the former Dorchester Town star may now be staying at the Wessex Stadium.
Hill said: “Everyone played their part in what was a good win against Bognor, but I must say I was really impressed with Simon Browne.
“It was the first time I’ve had a proper detailed look at him in a game situation and he impressed.
“He came in at left back, having not played for a while, and looked comfortable and assured.
“Since arriving at the club I’ve said the remaining games would be a learning process and that was certainly the case with Simon.
“Football is all about taking your opportunities when they come along and Simon definitely took his, now it is up to him to continue that form if selected over the remaining games.”
With the Terras due to go full-time from the summer, a stumbling block over Browne’s possible future with the club is his career with the Department for Social Security.
Meanwhile Hill admits he knows what work is needed in the coming months to turn Weymouth into a force next season, and says he will be telling those players who won’t be at Radipole Lane ‘sooner rather than later’.
The latest player to be released is midfielder Danny Byrne, who follows Mark Boyce and Kieren Keane through the exit door.
“I now how much work is needed and so it is important to let the lads know their futures nice and early,” he said.
“I had no problems with Danny but it is fair to let him go now so he can try and find himself another club as quickly as possible.”
Meanwhile Hill says he won’t be rushing a decision on the long-term future of goal hero Vill Powell.
The striker notched twice in last weekend’s win over Bognor Regis following his loan move from Grays.
But Hill says he will not think about whether to try and sign Powell, who cannot play for the Terras at Grays this Saturday, on a long-term deal until next month.
Hill said: “I was pleased for Vill on Saturday, he looked dangerous throughout and thoroughly deserved his two goals.
“But I’m not getting carried away on the basis of that one good performance.
“One swallow certainly doesn’t make a summer and I’m not going to rush into anything as far as Vill’s long-term future is concerned.”
