BACK ON HOME GROUND
After 18 years, Weymouth Football Club has bought back the land around the Bob Lucas Stadium in its own name. Many supporters will have assumed the club owned the surrounding land as well as the stadium. I’m proud to say the club now owns both.
Some of you will remember the training pitch behind the ground when the stadium opened in 1987. Our ambition is to bring football back there with a full-size 3G pitch. Women’s and girls’ football has grown enormously since those days, and our teams need more space to train and play.
Our men’s first team plays at the Bob Lucas Stadium, and our women’s team already plays some of its home matches here. I’d love to see them play here more often and for our youth teams to make their home here too. All our teams are the beating heart of this club. I want a youngster who trains here during the week to come back with their family on a Saturday, watch the Terras play and feel that this is their ground too.
We’d like local schools, teams and community groups to use the pitch too, and we’ll explore what other sporting facilities would serve the town well. Bringing more people to the ground throughout the week would generate income to reinvest in the club and help secure its future.
On behalf of the Board, I’d like to thank Lovell for working with us to bring the land back to Weymouth FC. My thanks also go to Simon Etherington for his help throughout and to Gareth Jones for his support.
To our supporters, volunteers, staff and sponsors, thank you for everything you do for Weymouth FC. Today is a proud day for everyone who cares about the Terras. We’ve brought this part of our home back.
Up the Terras!
Ralph Ricardo
Chairman, on behalf of the Board of Directors
