Matchday Preview – Exmouth Town (A) Match Day 7

The number 13 is infamously unlucky for some but hopefully not for Weymouth as they look to extend their unbeaten run at the start of the season to that number of games.
If they manage the feat it will be the first time in nearly 10 years at any point of the season and nearly 50 years since the start of a campaign.
Standing in their way on the South Devon coast is an Exmouth side enjoying their 5th campaign at this level since promotion from the western league in 2022. And promotion could be in their sights again if they maintain their strong start to the season as their current 8th place in the table hides the fact they have only played 5 games and lost just once against Dorchester last weekend.
This midweek affair will be the 8th time the Terras have faced “The Town” although only one was a competitive fixture. But what a fixture that was as the hosts caused a massive cup upset to dump the Terras out of the FA cup in 1989, Gerry Gow’s men falling to the team two rungs below them in the football pyramid.
The other six meetings were all friendlies over the years and all won by Weymouth apart from one draw in 1991. The most recent encounter was the summer of 2013 – a 4-0 victory for the Terras.
Although we haven’t been to their Southern Road ground since then there is one man who can show us the way if he has returned from injury – our current hot-shot forward Tor Swann who played a few games for the club two seasons ago.
League games on a Wednesday are not a common occurrence for the club – in fact this is just the 9th in the last 10 seasons, a period in which the Terras have won 4 games to 3 with just a solitary draw.
Will Wednesday be full of woe for Weymouth or can the Terras trounce triskaidekaphobia and make it 13 unbeaten?
