BOSS Garry Hill hailed Weymouth’s impressive 3-0 win at Sutton United as the best performance since he took over the Terras last month.
Goals from Darren Wheeler, Vill Powell and Charlie Macdonald at Gander Green Lane last night secured a second successive away win for the Wessex Stadium side.
The success means Hill takes his troops into Saturday’s season closer at home to St Albans City still with an outside chance of reaching the Conference South play-offs.
A delighted Hill said: “Last night’s win was probably the best 90 minutes we’ve played since myself and my team joined the club last month.
“In that time, we’ve had some good results winning five of our seven league games but our performances have been a bit patchy.
“However, our all-round showing at Sutton was excellent and we were well worth the points and the 3-0 scoreline.
“The lads played with confidence and, probably for the first time, looked like they were enjoying their football which is what I want to see.
“We were disciplined when we had to be, scored three good goals and secured another valuable three points.
“Now we go into the final game with an outside chance of reaching the play-offs and although I think it’s likely we’ll be one game short, you never know what may happen on Saturday.
“What we have to do is get a positive result at home to St Albans, in front of hopefully a big crowd, and just hope other results go our way.
“If they don’t, we have to at least give it our best shot and try and finish as high up the league as possible.”
Starring in last night’s win at Sutton was winger Wheeler, who scored and played an instrumental role in many Terras attacks. And the 21-year-old’s impressive performance did not go unnoticed by his manager.
Hill said: “Darren was man of the match and produced a really high standard of performance.
“He’s a young lad who has shown what he is capable of in previous games but last night he was excellent throughout.
“He is a good prospect and the challenge for him and us now is to try and ensure his is consistently good every time he plays. `Another good aspect to his performance last night was his workrate when he lost possession but that goes not just for Darren for the rest of the team as well.
“They all played their part in the win and showed the sort of commitment and work ethic we want at the club.”
