Bryan Lawrence

Biography

Bryan Lawrence was born in Upton, Poole, on 13 November 1954. He began playing for Hamworthy United in 1969, represented Dorset at schools and youth level and spent time with AFC Bournemouth before joining Weymouth in July 1973.

Lawrence made his Terras debut against Barnet on 11 August 1973 and immediately began an extraordinary sequence of availability. He played 128 consecutive games between that debut and 16 April 1975, then compiled another run of 125 consecutive appearances from April 1976 to April 1978. Those sequences illustrate the reliability that defined his Weymouth career.

The verified club ledger records 664 appearances, comprising 639 starts and 25 substitute appearances, with six goals. Lawrence captained Weymouth on 80 occasions, reached 150 first-team appearances before his 21st birthday and became the club’s youngest player to reach 500 appearances, at 26 years and 11 months.

His performances brought representative recognition when he was selected for the Football Association Representative XI in 1979–80. He was also honoured with two testimonials: a joint match with Derek Courtney against Chelsea in 1979 and another against Southampton in 1985.

Lawrence left Weymouth in May 1985 and joined Poole Town, making a further 50 appearances and scoring once before retiring in June 1987. He later helped with youth and senior football at Swanage. His consistency, captaincy and remarkable appearance record make him one of the defining Terras players of his era.
