Phil Stocker

Biography

Phil Stocker was born in Teignmouth on 15 December 1932 and first took football seriously at the town’s grammar school. He played senior football for Dawlish, appeared for Bristol Rovers during National Service and later joined the successful St Luke’s College side while training for a career in teaching.

Stocker also played for Arthur Coles at Barnstaple and scored a remarkable 65 goals during the 1954–55 season. When Coles moved to Weymouth, he persuaded Stocker to follow him to the Recreation Ground. Stocker arrived as an amateur in 1955 and later signed part-time professional forms while teaching mathematics and physical education at Weymouth Grammar School.

Initially a forward, Stocker made a highly successful switch to full-back around 1957. That adaptability helped underpin a long Terras career lasting until 1970. The club’s verified appearance ledger records 444 appearances—428 starts and 16 as a substitute—with 70 goals. He also represented both Dorset and Somerset in county football.

After leaving Weymouth he became player-manager of Bridport, spending four seasons there. He returned to the Recreation Ground in 1974 as reserve-team manager and remained for another two seasons, extending a connection with the club that had already spanned 15 years as a player.

Stocker’s story is notable not only for its longevity but for its range: prolific goalscorer, accomplished defender, teacher and coach. He was inducted into the Weymouth Football Club Hall of Fame in 2020.
