Biography

Alex Browne was a commanding defender and captain during the turn-of-the-century Terras sides. Comfortable at centre-back or as a sweeper, he was repeatedly described in contemporary match reports as the organiser and last line of protection in front of the goalkeeper.

The club ledger records his Weymouth span as 1999 to 2003, with 610 appearances, including 579 starts and 31 substitute appearances, and 57 goals. Those established archive totals are retained here as the authoritative statistical record.

Reports from the 2002–03 campaign show Browne captaining the side, making decisive covering challenges and directing the defence. Against Havant & Waterlooville in September 2002, an archived report described him appearing “from nowhere” to block a goal-bound effort in a hard-earned 1–0 away win. In the same period he was used as a sweeper and remained a threat from set pieces.

Browne’s combination of leadership, defensive reading and a notable scoring return made him one of the defining Weymouth players of his period.
