Derek Courtney

Biography

Derek “Catweazle” Courtney was born in Wareham on 12 May 1953 and represented Dorset at schools and youth level. He joined Weymouth from local Dorset Combination League club Wareham Rangers in July 1971 and developed into one of the club’s most durable and productive players of the 1970s.

Courtney’s decade at the Recreation Ground combined longevity with a substantial scoring contribution. The club’s appearance ledger records 486 appearances, including 386 starts and 100 substitute appearances, with 115 goals. His versatility and consistency made him a familiar figure through a period of major change in the Southern League.

Supporters recognised his contribution by naming him the Travelling Supporters’ Club Player of the Year in 1977–78. The following season he and long-serving team-mate Bryan Lawrence were awarded a joint testimonial against Chelsea, reflecting the standing both players had earned at Weymouth.

After ten years with the Terras, Courtney moved to Poole Town in August 1981 in a £1,500 transfer. He remained a prolific player there, scoring 79 goals in 135 appearances, before joining Salisbury in July 1985. Away from football, he worked as an electrician.

Courtney’s Weymouth record places him firmly among the club’s great long-serving players: nearly 500 appearances, more than a century of goals and a decade of service during the 1970s and early 1980s.
