Jason Matthews is one of the most enduring figures in modern Weymouth history: a long-serving goalkeeper, former player-manager and a continuing member of the club’s football staff. Born in Paulton, Somerset, on 13 March 1975, he attended the Millfield School of Excellence and was attached to Bristol Rovers as a schoolboy before building an extensive career in senior football. Before and between his spells with the Terras, Matthews represented clubs including Nuneaton Borough, Exeter City, Aberystwyth Town, Clevedon Town, Eastleigh, Bath City and Dorchester Town. He first joined Weymouth in 2002 and became a major presence in goal during a successful period for the club. His Weymouth career ledger records 464 appearances, including 453 starts, and one goal. That goal came in a Conference match against Southport in March 2007, a rare distinction for a goalkeeper. Matthews was also selected to tour Tanzania and Zanzibar with Middlesex Wanderers after the 2006–07 season. Matthews returned to Weymouth for the 2013–14 campaign and became player-manager in December 2013. He continued to combine goalkeeping duties with management and was named in the Non-League Paper’s team of the season for 2013–14. His tenure as manager continued until April 2017, by which point he had given the club long service both on the pitch and from the technical area. His contribution was formally recognised in 2019 when he became one of the inaugural inductees into the Weymouth Football Club Hall of Fame. Matthews subsequently returned to the club’s backroom structure in coaching, goalkeeping and football-operations roles. He is currently listed with the men’s first-team management group as Director of Football. Across his playing, managerial and staff service, Matthews has remained closely connected to the Terras for more than two decades. His longevity, leadership and willingness to serve the club in several different capacities have made him a significant part of Weymouth’s recent history.
